Lost in Sanity — a flaming sun-cross

Ludington, Michigan · 2004–2005

Lost in Sanity were two sixteen-year-olds with a drum kit, a Washburn, and a copy of the recording software that came with the V-Drums. In seven months they wrote a record, changed their name to dodge a band from the eighties, posted twenty-one news updates, and put the whole thing on the internet.

The site went quiet in early 2005. Everything below survived.

The Lost Insanity EP

The band’s debut, and the only record they finished. All seven tracks are here, in the 128 kbps encodes that were the master copies — the same files that were on the site, plus the one it said you couldn’t have.

The file is named Welcome to THEM — recorded before the name change and never renamed. The 2005 site listed this track as UNAVAILABLE.

From the audio page, 2005: “The Lost in Sanity CD is currently in the creation process. It will be The Lost Insanity EP (with the songs recorded at a higher quality and under revision) plus many additional tracks. Be on the lookout for this CD.”

It was never made.

What Happened to THEM?

Our band used to be called THEM. However, there were some naming conflicts that occurred. There already was a band with that name and actually had made it decently big back in the 80’s. So, to avoid any legal difficulties we changed our name to Lost in Sanity.

Also from the home page: Lost in Sanity, a new band in the Ludington, Michigan area working hard to become noticed. Starting this past summer (2004), they have already finished a demo CD and are working to get a complete album finished. There have been many hard times along the way (for example, they had to change the band name from THEM to Lost in Sanity due to naming conflicts, but they have managed so far).

The band

Josh Mogerman

Vocals and drums · junior in highschool

On the band forming: “I’m really excited for Lost In Sanity and hope that we can become successful in Ludington. Eventually I hope we can get some gigs, who else knows what could happen?”

On his drum lines: “From Jon Bonham (Led Zepplin), Keith Moon (The Who), and Travis Barker (blink-182).”

On his lyrics: “I write from the heart on some of the songs; of past and current experiences. Also, a lot of the lyrics come from me just wanting to go out and have fun, for example, our new song (Hangover Blues).”

On how long: “Both of them I have been doing for over 6 years.”

Brandon Martinez

Brandon Martinez

Guitar · junior in highschool

On the band forming: “I think that it’s pretty awesome. This is actually the first band I have ever been in and I’ve been having a lot of fun it.”

On writing guitar parts: “Mainly, it is just a lot of messing around. However, I do tend to follow some simple scale and chord progressions. Also, Josh tends to give some pretty kickin’ rifts and I turn it into guitar.”

On inspiration: “Mostly, I get a lot of inspiration from Billie Joe Armstrong (Green Day), he turns guitar into a rhythmic, simple, yet effective instrument. He is my main source of inspiration. I also take a lot of inspiration from The Offspring, Static-X, Nickelback, and a few other bands.”

On how long: “It’s been a little over a year now. I started playing in the October of sophomore year.”

January 24, 2005

2:59 P.M.] Hey everyone! Sorry it has been so long. Obviously we were not able to accomplish finishing our songs by December 31st. We did try to and we came out with some nicer versions of the songs. Of course, as always, they are available in the Audio section (now with MP3 format available). We have been working on a few things, including writing better music. We were going to do Battle of the Bands, but unfortunately, Josh has a hockey game the same day as it. We'll keep you all updated on what happens.

November 22, 2004

4:24 P.M.] Yeah, it has been a very long time since the last update. We have managed to get one song on the web site. Sorry about the quality, it was kind of on the spot and all. I didn't think it was that bad. Don't worry though, we'll get the final copies of all of our songs out soon. We are planning to finish the new stuff by December 31, 2004. School has been a pain for recording, we have exams all this week. Not cool at all. Oh well, I'll be back later to keep you all posted.

October 28, 2004

7:00 P.M.] Wow, it's been quite a long time since the web site has been updated. It's nice to see that some of you have been posting to the web site. We are desperately trying to work on our new music and get everything on the web site. We are hoping to record some stuff tomorrow, but if it turns out like the others we planned, we're not going to get very far. We can only hope for the best. Don't worry though, we do have new songs that are almost completely done. All we have to do is record.

October 16, 2004

12:52 P.M.] Today I added three desktop wallpapers to the wallpaper section. Check them out, I think they're pretty cool.

October 08, 2004

9:44 P.M.] Well, after many different trials with web site designs, I think I've finally decided to stick with this one. I think it looks really good (then again, I did design it). It will do for now. Minor changes may be made and new pages will be added to the Extras section. And of course, the news and this journal will always be updated. Thank you all for being dedicated in coming here.

October 04, 2004

11:13 P.M.] The site is headed towards a new site design. After beind inspired by some Tool art, I came up with this site. It still has some changed to come, but it is getting to its final state. We had a jam session this past Saturday. It went okay, but we didn't get much done. However, we've been planning a lot of our music out and may end up changing our style. Maybe a bit more grunge/punk. We're not sure on all of that yet, though. Be on the look out for updates.

September 26, 2004

4:18 P.M.] I've been working on a new site design lately. Still trying to a find a nice one that fits the band. As of right now, it's based off the original THEM web site. It has a nice look, but it could be better. Check back every so often to see the progress. Also, I finished writing a song on guitar, it'll be a catchy song for you all to listen to. Josh is working on the lyrics to it. If I were to compare it to a song, it would be Hitchin' A Ride by Green Day . Which, oddly enough, their song was a Stray Cats style.

September 22, 2004

3:07 P.M.] It has been a very long time since I have posted, so I thought I would give you all the updates. As you can probably tell from the web site, we have changed our name. This is from a naming conflict that has arisen which we quickly took care of. This was a good thing to avoid as we do not care to get sued. Also, after distributing the THEM EP (now named The Lost Insanity EP), we have recieved many of your comments. Thank you all for inputing your thoughts, it has helped us a lot. The next CD we put out will be generated from many of the comments recieved as well as many of our own improvements. The songs will all be revised to give an over all better quality as well as better songs overall. Much research has been getting put into our music thanks to all of our loyal fans. Thank you everyone! On a sadder note, school has started. Due to this little blockade, jamming will be cut down. We are still working our butts off to complete everything and become something that you all can't take out of your CD players, but it takes time.

September 04, 2004

2:57 P.M.] Well, it has been a few days since I have written on here and I figured now would be a good time. A few days ago (Wednesday, September 1st), Josh and I had the final recording session for the EP. It took us over 10 hours total to get just the recording done. We did get to finish it though. As of now, I am working on the final production of our CD. The CD's are being created, the labels and packaging are being done, and everything is being readied for the 7th. I can only hope it all gets done soon, as we are going to start working on the completed Lost In Sanity album this Sunday (the 5th).

August 29, 2004

7:02 P.M.] Okay everyone, after many changes and all we have finally decided on the date of releasing the EP. September 7th, 2004 will be the official released date of The Lost Insanity EP . This Wednesday (Sept. 1st) or Thursday (Sept. 2) we are going to have our final jam/recording session for the EP. This also means we are going to work on getting the cover and labels printed and the CDs produced. So look forward to the CD coming soon!

August 23, 2004

9:55 P.M.] Josh stopped by after work today and we worked a few finishing touches out on the songs. He has been writing the lyrics out into their final forms, as well as developing a couple new songs. It almost seems strange the rate we're are coming up with things. It looks like The Lost Insanity EP will have a B-Side to it. The final CD may have all the songs on it, but I'm not too sure about that. Anyway, I've been thinking a lot about sending in demo CDs to some record labels. See if Lost In Sanity can get noticed by anyone. We need to start getting some gigs. That's all I know.

August 21, 2004

5:12 P.M.] Yesterday went okay. We have had better jam sessions. We did come up with a new song which is in demo form, The End (title may change). Other than that, we really didn't get much progress.

August 19, 2004

2:16 P.M.] Tomorrow we are having another jam/recording session. I wrote a new song on guitar that we are going to turn into a finished product. It will probably be the most complex song (I chose to write one a little more complex because people were saying that there was too much repetition in the others, I personally think it is almost what makes them catchy). So, Josh and will be starting early (for us, which is 1 or 2 in the afternoon) and getting some things done. Not that I endorse any products on this site besides our own, but we may go watch Alien Vs. Predator (which is going to be awesome, my dad saw it and said it kicked!). Not that it has to do with anything, but I thought I would tell you all. Well, time for me to go, I'm heading to Muskegon to do some clothes shopping and to go out for lunch; talk to you all tomorrow.

August 13, 2004

9:36 P.M.] The Jam Session today kicked ass! We whipped through it crazy fast and had and awesome turn out with the songs. I love how today went. I think we will get this CD done very quickly, which is actually kind of scary to me. I mean, if you think about it all, it almost seems like we are doing this all way too fast. It makes me think we should delay the CD or just release it as a " Demo " kind of thing.

August 12, 2004

5:02 A.M.] Well, I can't sleep so I thought I would write an entry. The band is doing well so far. Josh and I have been working on a few new songs, about four or so, and we will be recording them on Friday. Hopefully we get them finished. Also, we might re-record the other three songs to give a better final product. I hope our CD is done by the end of the month. That would be awesome. It would give us something to distribute at school. For those of you who haven't noticed, I redesigned the logo a bit. And for those of you who don't know, I'm the one who created the web site. Nothing too fancy, just something simple to let everyone know what's going on. Today I posted all the updates for the site. I also added this section. You all should enjoy the writings to come.

Lost in… Blythe?

Even though Lost in Sanity is not able to attend Battle of the Bands, we do have some good news. One of our friends in the band Blythe, Jacob Redman, has invited Brandon to play along side of them. The following line up has been arranged: Matt Lewis will on the Acoustic/Rhythm Guitar and singing Vocals, Jacob Redman (Blythe) will be the Lead Guitarist, Brandon Martinez (Lost in Sanity) will be on Bass Guitar, Nick Sims will be on vocals, and Sean Herbert will be on drums.

Battle of the bands will be held at West Shore Community College from 7 to 11 P.M. on Febuary 5th. Be sure to attend and watch Blythe perform. They will be 4th in the lineup so predict around 8 or 9 to see them.

Placing: Blythe managed to pull off 4th place after a week of practicing and learning material. Not too bad for a quick throw together project.

And, filed under “Interesting Fusion”: It may be possible for Lost in Sanity and Blythe to create a side band to combine musical talents. Be on the look out for any new developments.

That was the last thing the site ever said about the future. Lost in Sanity stopped updating three weeks later; Brandon joined Blythe on bass and stayed until 2007.

The story of this page

Lost in Sanity never owned a domain. The site lived as a folder on the hosting account of Geeky Computer Services, the guitarist’s own business — which is why every page on the original site is stamped “Copyright © 2004 Lost In Sanity & Geeky Computer Services.” When that hosting was cancelled in March 2005, the site went with it. There is no copy in the Internet Archive.

For twenty years the only trace was the name lostinsanity, which turned out to be a PureVolume and GarageBand.com username registered on January 2, 2007 — long after the band had stopped. The domain lostinsanity.net was never theirs. It was registered in 2026, specifically to give this archive somewhere to live.

What survived was the site folder itself, zipped and carried forward across two decades of machines, and the audio — sitting in a music backup on an external drive, complete. Every word here is from those files. Nothing was rewritten, and the typos are all original.

Two things are deliberately missing: the guestbook, and the band members’ birth dates. Everything else is exactly as it was.
